i think its in the haynes manual. shorly it cant be that hard to do, maybe doing it in a specific order is the way to go.

i remember doing this, one of the first things i sorted when i bought my mini.
the trick is not to undo the collar, but the plate it attaches to.
there is a small bolt next to the where cable goes into the gearbox, which can be reached trough the inner wing.
undo the nut, then lift out the small plate, and undo the collar away from the car. its so much easier.
then refit the new cable to the plate, thread the plate through the engine bay, and do up the small nut.
i found it easier anyway. good luck!

Last post is right it is a easy job just a little tight to get at and get a tool on the nut. You of course need to tackle this job from under the car.
Is the inner cable broken? If not and it is the piece you want to change you can just pull the inner out of the cable outer from the speedo end and then thread the new one into the cable outer.

Which speedo cable do I need?
I have just discovered why my speedo is not registering, it is to do with the fact that the cable has sheared half way down. Now i have found this i need to replace it, but which one do i need? My car is a b reg (1985) mayfair 998 all standard with the smiths two dial dash (speedo and temp guage).
If anyone knows the part on minispares please contact me. Thanks.
Pete.

which speedo cable????? plz help
Hi everybody,
Brought my first mini the other day, a 1976 leyland mini special.
The previous owner has fitted an mg metro 1300gt engine and gearbox (badly), and couldnt even be bothered with the speedo cable.
It has the original center dash config (smiths speedo upto 90mph).
Does anybody know if there is a standard cable which will fit? or whether its a custom cable job?
Any help greatly appreciated
Cheers, Adam

http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=33827 this one should work. the speedo wont read correctly tho as it was designed to run with a differnt differntial ratio and speedo drive gears. pre 1980 minis varyied the speedo according to differnt differnial ratios in order to get the correct. after 1980 they used one speedo unit but varyied the speedo gears in gearbox to vary the drive. so you may find that speedo reads wrong. speedo cable is also a pain and a half to fit to gearbox good luck.

What Speedo Cable and Coil would work best?
Hi, I am currently getting ready to fit an MG metro engine from an E reg Metro in to a Mini. The car it is going in to is fitted with a Centre Clock Speedo. What would be the correct Speedo Cable I would need? The Metro Engine Gearbox Number is- A/BZ3 DAM BC 5626
Also,
The new engine has electronic ignition (as standard on the MG Metro) so what would be a good choice of coil to use?
Many Thanks
Paul :-)

Hi, i have a 1993 mini cooper 1.3i, the speedo spopped working and i dismantled the speedo and worked out it was the cable that was broke, the square end that goes into the guage, i have managed to take the old cable out completely, i followed the cable down and undone the end that attatches to the engine at some point, (im not a mechanic just an amatuer) i was just wondering how do i fit this end into the engine, its a round end, and the 1 i took out was square, do i need to crimp the end? please help someone, many thanks in advance

1996 Mini Speedo Cable
I've been trying to remove the fascia all day. First its fittings look nothing like described in the reference books, but i've figured that out. My problem is in disconnecting the speedo cable from the spreedo itself. It doesn't have a knurled knob but a plastic fitting with two wings on it. Is it a "push and turn" or do the wings have some part in the release?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
